Fees & Insurance

What this costs, and how insurance fits

Clear answers on rates, out-of-network benefits, superbills, and your right to a Good Faith Estimate.

The short version

I am credentialed with Aetna through Headway for therapy services in Florida only. I do not take any other insurance at this time.

If you do not have Aetna in Florida, Harbor Counseling is considered a self-pay, out-of-network provider. That means you are billed directly for services, and you can submit a superbill to your insurance for potential reimbursement.

Submitting a superbill does not guarantee reimbursement, so I encourage you to confirm your benefits with your insurance company first. The questions worth asking are below.

Rates

Session fees

Self-pay rates, billed directly. For Florida clients using Aetna through Headway, billing runs through Headway instead.

Out-of-network

Three questions to ask your insurer

Call the number on the back of your card and ask about mental health benefits.

  1. 01

What are my out-of-network benefits for mental health?

This tells you what percentage, if any, they reimburse for a licensed psychologist outside their network.

  2. 02

Do I have a deductible to meet first?

Many plans require you to reach an out-of-network deductible before any reimbursement begins.

  3. 03

How do I submit, and how long does it take?

Ask about the process, the forms, and the typical timeline so there are no surprises later.

Access

If cost is the barrier

Reduced rate spots

If you cannot use insurance and do not have out-of-network benefits, I keep a limited number of reduced rate spots on my caseload, based on income.

There is no awkwardness in asking. If you think you may be eligible, say so when you reach out and we will talk about it directly.

Why out-of-network at all

Insurance panels place real constraints on treatment: session limits, required diagnoses, and documentation that becomes part of your permanent record.

Working outside that keeps decisions about your care between us, and it is why specialist practices frequently operate this way. It also means the cost falls on you, which is exactly why this page exists.

Plainly

No surprises, in either direction

You will know the fee before the first session, what a superbill can and cannot do, and where you stand if money becomes the reason this stops working.

Your rights

What a Good Faith Estimate is

Under the No Surprises Act, effective January 1, 2022, you have the right to a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your care will cost before you receive it.

Who it applies to

Clients who are uninsured, or who are not using insurance to pay for their care. That includes paying the practice directly and submitting a superbill to your insurer yourself. Sessions billed in network through Headway are not covered by this requirement.

What you receive, and when

A written estimate before your first session: within one business day of scheduling if it is three to nine business days away, or within three business days if it is further out. You can also ask for one before you schedule. For ongoing therapy it covers up to 12 months of sessions, and major changes to your treatment plan, such as a change in session frequency or an annual rate change, mean a new estimate.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute it within 120 days of the bill. For more information, visit cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.

Money

Fees, billing, and cancellations

Only Aetna, through Headway, for therapy in Florida. Otherwise I am out of network, so you pay at the time of the session and I give you a superbill to submit. Whether your insurance covers therapy at an out-of-network rate, and how much of it, depends entirely on your plan. The reliable way to find out is to call the number on the back of your card and ask what they reimburse for an out-of-network licensed psychologist.
